KOTA KINABALU, Oct 15 (Bernama) -- Physical works to expand and upgrade the Sepanggar Container Port near here will begin next year, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan.
Abdul Rahman said the initial work of the project, which received RM1.02 billion allocation approved by the federal government through the Economic Planning Unit, was in progress, in terms of preparation of masterplan, study and design.
He said the expansion and upgrading of port infrastructure would enhance operational capacity and further boost trade activity and stimulate the state's economic growth more rapidly.
"The port is so important for Sabah and the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (SEDIA) and Sabah Port Sdn Bhd have plans to make it capable of handling container trade for the region," he said.
Abdul Rahman said this to reporters after a briefing from SEDIA and Sabah Port Sdn Bhd on upgrading and expansion of the port during his visit here today.
He said Sabah was a strategic location to be a transhipment hub for the surrounding areas, including East Asia-Brunei Growth Area, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines besides its proximity with Japan, China, Hong Kong and Korea.
Abdul Rahman said the federal government was committed to ensuring that port's efficiency was improved to enable the prices of the products in Sabah's were reduced.
"If the port is efficient in terms of infrastructure and operations, it does not mean that the prices of the goods will fall immediately as other issues such as road connectivity has to be taken into consideration. However, this (upgrading and expansion of Sepanggar container port) is a start," he said.
