MISC Forms Special Squad On MT Bunga Melati Dua Problem
August 22, 2008 00:49 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia International Shipping Corporation (MISC) Berhad has formed a special team to tackle the problem on the attack by pirates on the ship MT Bunga Melati Dua at Gulf of Aden, Thursday.

International Maritime Bureau (IMB) Head Noel Chong said the bureau had held a meeting with the MISC today to discuss the matter and find a solution to the problem.

"We had a meeting today and reached a consensus to set up the special squad to tackle the problem, but I can't comment on what we had discussed as it is confidential," he said when contacted by Bernama Thursday.

In the incident on Tuesday, the vessel belonging to the national shipping line, was seized by a group of armed pirates at the Gulf of Aden, between Yemen and Somalia.

There were 29 Malaysian nationals and 10 Philippine nationals on board the ship when the incident occurred.

Meanwhile a statement from Wisma Putra said: "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to monitor the situation and developments through the Malaysian High Commission in Kenya and the Malaysian Embassy in Yemen to coordinate the peaceful recovery of the vessel and the safe return of all crew members on board."

The ministry said it would endeavour to utilise all diplomatic channels and would work closely with countries in the region to end this crisis amicably.
